St Nicolas Bread Men

Tomorrow, December 6th, is St Nicolas day. Our family tradition is to make bread men together while listening to Christmas music. Sometimes we end up with bread angels, bread women, bread snowmen, or who knows what. There is usually quite a bit of fun and laughter involved before the making and eating is done.

St Nicolas Bread Men
1 ¼ cup (3 dl) lukewarm milk
1 packet (7 g) dry yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup (50 g) butter, softened
3 1/3 cups (500 g) flour

In large mixing bowl, pour milk over yeast and let sit 2 min. Add sugar and salt and dissolve. Mix in flour and butter and knead about 4 minutes, adding more flour little by little till no longer sticky. Let rise for 2 hours. Divide the dough in 8. Shape into bread men, brush with egg whites and let rise 20 minutes. Cook at 350° F (175° C) for 20 minutes.
